What is Minimally Invasive (MIS) or Keyhole Foot Surgery?

Essentially, MIS is a type of procedure performed without the need for a large incision and is an alternative to open procedures.  Traditionally, when patients required surgery to rectify a condition such as a bunion or chronic heel pain, the surgeon needed to open up the foot to perform the necessary treatments. Minimally invasive foot surgery offers the opportunity to perform the same treatments using keyhole incisions as the surgeon uses special instruments such as a fluoroscope (Live X-ray). The openings are usually so small they only require a couple of stitches and the overall trauma to the foot is greatly reduced.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has become increasingly popular in recent years as an alternative to traditional approaches for foot related conditions. Modern advances in MIS techniques and technology enable many benefits, including tiny incisions, a walking recovery, potential less post-operative pain, shorter operative time, less infection risk, reduced swelling, minimal scarring, and an overall easier recovery. However, the biggest advantage of MIS is the ability to remedy the condition with minimal disruption or trauma to the surrounding skin and soft tissue.
